A well woman exam is aimed at targeting areas of health that are specific to
women. It is a specialized type of physical for women. A typical well woman’s
exam includes a breast exam and a pelvic exam.
During the breast exam, your doctor will feel for any abnormal lumps that could
detect cancer or benign tissue growth. They will also check for any visual
abnormalities which may also be indicators of tissue growth.
A pelvic is
a comprehensive exam of the vulva, vagina and cervix. A visual exam is performed
along with what is known as a Pap smear or a “Pap test”. These tests are used to
determine general health and are used to detect any sexually transmitted
diseases or cervical cancer. A Pap smear is a test of sample cells taken from a
woman’s cervix. You might feel discomfort during this test but should feel no
pain.
